A four-inch swastika was found at New Rochelle High School on Wednesday, prompting an investigation, school officials said. A temporary fix has been put in place to make the sign less recognized until employees at the school can make a permanent fix.
The incident is under investigation, and if a student is identified as a suspect, he is subject to a suspension from the school.
“The district’s Code of Conduct states that students may be subject to disciplinary action if they engage in conduct that endangers the safety, physical or mental health or welfare of others,” the district said through a spokesperson.
“We are disappointed in this act, but we are also comforted in knowing that the vast majority of our students are respectful, responsible and culturally aware. Nonetheless, when something like this occurs, it reminds us of the importance of educating our young adults about the powerful impacts certain symbols carry.”
“The appearance of a symbol of hatred and genocide in the heart of our community is deeply unsettling, especially in the context of increasingly prevalent incidents of anti-Semitism nationwide,” New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said.
“Whether produced with an intent or harm or out of ignorance and insensitivity, it highlights the importance of teaching our children the lessons of history and of setting a positive example of respect for all human beings.
"Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of New Rochelleans reject bigotry in all its forms and embrace with gratitude and pride neighbors of every faith, ethnicity, tradition and heritage.”
